Something happened to Kano-san at trial. And it's been troubling me.

I think. . . everyone will continue to think of him badly, for how he acted at trial, and think it was his fault, because they don't know about it.

[ honestly, zuko has pretty complicated feelings on kano.... but he didn't want him to die. ]

What happened to him?

Somebody used their gem on him. It had the power to make him be kind. But. . . he didn't know who did it, or why, and that's why he was so. . .

... He must have known something was wrong, and acted out.

[ that does explain a few things. ]

That's... really bad timing.

That's what he said happened. So. . . I wish we had known that.

I know not everyone got along with Kano-san, but he was always kind to me. I think he was a person who wanted to be kinder to others. But you can't make a person change by forcing them.

[cuedoves]

Me too.

[ that makes a big difference ]

Yeah, it's not that easy. It takes hard work, and you have to want to change. If were as simple as someone else wishing for it... well, the world would be a lot different.

Yes. I wish he had gotten the opportunity to try.

When I talked to him about it, I mentioned how. . . I wanted to change because I made a promise to my younger brother. But Kano-san didn't have anybody in his life to make a promise like that to. And I think it is really impossible for any person to grow or change without help from others.

But there were people here who cared about him. So maybe, if he'd had more time. . .

Do you know who did it?

[ zuko always had his uncle, and there's no way he would have changed without him. so. yeah. he exhales. ]

If not for Uncle, I wouldn't have changed, either. But Kano.... he seemed like he really wanted us to hate him, even at the end.

Mm. But. . . she feels terrible. She cried a lot. So I don't want. . .

[Don't be mean to her even if he feels a little iffy about it.]

I'm not sure. He asked me not to think badly of him. Last night.

[cuedoves]

.... I'm not going to yell at her. Whoever it is. I just wish she had spoken up sooner.

[ he has a couple of guesses, though. ]

Even though he acted like he wanted to push people away.... he couldn't keep that up with you, I bet.

. . . He was always very nice to me. I think we were similar in some ways. [Were you?????] Um. Kano-san smiled and laughed lot, but I think he really hated when people told him how to feel, or to pretend about his feelings just to get along with everyone. I also don't like that.

[cuedoves]

... I guess that explains a few things.

I don't know. You don't beat around the bush. You always say what you mean. He's..... well, I don't know. He always seemed like he was holding back his real feelings.

[Hmm.]

But I think, because he was holding them back. . . I've never been able to do that. Even if I wanted to pretend. I've never been able to laugh and smile just to get along with everybody. And I think he understood that.

I don't think you're that similar. But I do think he admired you. I think you could have been the one to inspire him to become a better man.
