Anyway, Mob comes home from school and finds out his house is on fire. He walks right into the burning building, and tries to convince himself it’ll be okay and his mom, dad, and brother are safe, but then he sees what looks like their corpses upstairs. He starts to completely lose control, but Dimple manages to convince him that the corpses are actually dummies planted by the real kidnapper.
Mob buys this, but still goes extremely over the top. He learns a new ability instantly to locate psychics, finds some, and starts kicking their ass unless they tell him about the power to create dummies.
Finally, some shady guys come and throw Mob in a car. He doesn’t resist, because these are some former enemies and he thinks they’re kidnapping him to where his family is. He learns though that they’re acting teaming up with Reigen and some of his friends to go into hiding. When he hears Reigen is there, he makes the car fly and speeds off to where they’re taking him.
He goes right to Reigen and stands there melting down while Dimple explains. Reigen seems to catch on that Dimple’s dummy idea was a lie to keep him from going berserk mode, but he repeats the lie really reassuringly and convincingly. Convinced his family is safe, Mob passes out in relief.]
Vezda has no idea how to process this. Mob's always seemed like a sweet kid. Stupid, naive, but sweet.
So seeing the poor kid's house and family up in flames feels unfair. Granted, he knows full well that life isn't fair, but that doesn't make it any easier to see.
Then he watches the kid go absolutely apeshit and, well. Vezda will never admit it, but in that moment, he's scared of Mob. He didn't realize the kid was so powerful, nor that he could become so unhinged. It's...there's no word for it other than disturbing. ]
Holy shit.
[ He is suddenly struck with how utterly clueless he is in this moment. He feels like he's been handed a bomb, ready to go off with even the smallest wrong action. ]
Are you, uh...okay?
[ well. defusing bombs has never been his specialty. ]
[Yeah, that's the thing about Mob being nerfed. He's not necessarily more dramatic than your average teenager - maybe one who's a little repressed and tends to lash out harder when he's pushed to the edge as a result. But that teenage angst hits harder when you're easily the most powerful person in your world.
Right now, he looks a little stressed? But. . . he seems fine.]
I . . . I don't like thinking about that. I went a little overboard.
[Oh. Well. He's bad at explaining these things, but. . .]
. . . They work for this organization of ESPers, Claw. [So like. Some comic book shit.] Those two guys I fought, and also the ones in the car, all work for it.
Sometimes they abduct people with powers. [Especially children.] A while back one of their divisions took my brother, so I went to go rescue him. I don't exactly remember what happened with that, but. . . those guys in the car were the ones who took him, so I guess they survived.
I think what everyone was saying is - the main organization started coming after people who were involved in what happened to the division. So they burned down my house, and Reigen-san's office, and - oh. Hanazawa-kun's house, too.
Mm. It isn't really fair, that my little brother has to deal with people like that.
[But there's something more about the memory that really bothers me.]
. . . That's what I meant. My master - Reigen-san - lied about what happened. [The end, where he calmed him down by telling him it was okay.] Somehow, I didn't realize until recently.
Mmm. Good strategy. I mean--not great, but about as good as you can get, trapped here as we are.
[ He wonders what else to say that could possibly help, if at all, but he is saved the effort by another bubble approaching and popping before them, plunging the two of them into a frozen Polish forest in 1942.
Cap and the other Invaders are taken, and the only person left who can help them now is Bucky. And by god, he's going to save them, one way or another. He says it like it's a foregone conclusion.
But as he frantically follows his kidnapped teammates' trail, he can't quite swallow the fear and uncertainty. What the hell does he think he's doing? The rest of the Invaders--they're all strong and powerful, capable of the sorts of things once thought only possible in fantasy. Supersoldiers with inhuman speed and strength, men made of fire, a water-breathing sea king...and here Bucky is, just a dumb kid in tights with a couple of guns. Who is he kidding? If they could take out all the Invaders at once, what chance did Bucky stand of helping?
The memory of Namor's words sting more than the winter air whipping his face: "If sarcasm were your superpower, perhaps you'd carry your weight among us."
But, for better or for worse, Bucky has never known how to quit while he was ahead. So when the trail leads to a castle, he doesn't hesitate to sneak in. And when he sees his friends being tortured, their power being siphoned into some freak superman, he doesn't hesitate to jump in then, either. After all--what else can he possibly do?
It's enough. He gets the shit kicked out of him, but he stays up long enough for the rest of the Invaders to get back on their feet and end this.
He's bruised, he's bloody, but he thinks that, for the first time, he really, truly feels like he can stand alongside his teammates, instead of stumbling in their shadows. ]
