I can't speak for them, but I don't think that's quite right. We may have put a less concentrated effort with knowing there's a correct vote, but I do feel there's something more not everyone knows.
[ old man gay lore is mysterious and complicated and apparently includes 10 years in a cyoa, and jeanne only knows some of it. ]
[He's been digesting this thought for a while, but.]
Archer-san aimed a bow at Kano-san. Even though Kano-san. . . Kano-san shouldn't have done what he did, but also he was an innocent person! He never killed anybody! To threaten to shoot him - that's a terrible thing to do!
[ There is actually a moment of surprise. Jeanne had been so focused on not getting scalpeled to death that she could't pay attention to what was happening elsewhere and no one told her Archer did that.
There's a pause as she digests that. ]
Did you ask him why he did that?
[ Jeanne says this all calmly, neutrally. She isn't trying to persuade him, only present him with a viewpoint as if it's something he could read from a book and form his opinion on.
She hopes that's how he'll take it, at least. ]
Everyone has their own priorities and their own philosophies. D you remember that Kano asked me to wait before pulling the lever, but I didn't? Isn't that also something that could be considered terrible?
It may be a terrible thing to you that he was prepared to shoot Kano after he attacked me, and you are not wrong for thinking so, but he considered it the right thing for him to do. There were things he considered as his responsibility.
[He's not the best at confrontation. If someone he feels he trusts well does something he doesn't understand, he'll talk to them about it. But as much as he did like Archer before that moment, it upset him enough that his reaction was to just want to avoid him after that.]
It surprised me, that he did that. Archer-san has always been so kind to me. Even while he was trying to shoot him, he was kind to me. But. . . but Kano-san. . . I didn't want someone to hurt him.
You didn't have a choice, but. . . if you did have one, I'm sure you wouldn't have hurt him, right?
[ ... Ah. She feels as if this is where she might disappoint him. ]
It depends on his actions. Kano wanted to live, and I don't fault or resent him for that, but I can't say I wouldn't have hurt him, if he continued to be violent. If it weren't me that had been chosen...
[ It's a what if situation, so no one could know what Kano would have done after, if he managed to free himself of his removal. ]
You can be kind and still hurt someone. You don't have to be cruel in order to choose to harm.
[He is disappointed, a little, but at this point Jeanne has earned so much of his trust that he doesn't take it so much as a let down as a challenge to his thinking. Jeanne is a good person, that much he knows, so he assumed she wouldn't have hurt Kano-san. But because Jeanne is a good person the fact that she might hurt Kano-san means that maybe he was a little mistaken in his assumptions.
Kano-san didn't deserve to be killed, but if he did kill someone, he might have been dangerous. He takes a moment to consider that and finds he doesn't actually agree with that, but he can understand it, a little.]
. . . I think you and Archer-san are wrong. It isn't right to decide someone's dangerous and hurt them before even trying to talk to them. But I don't think you're cruel, or a bad person. And I don't think Archer-san is, either.
I know you don't have to be cruel to harm someone, but it's also possible to make a different choice.
[ She is fine that he doesn't agree. In fact, in some ways, she prefers it. ]
I would talk to them first. I always try to understand first. Actions and motives go together, and I consider them.
[ She doesn't hesitate to clear that up. She, as Ruler, is someone who strives to be fair. She, as Ruler, also tries not to keep too much harm from spreading. ]
Kano told me he was willing to turn the whole world against him, if he had to. He told me that he would do anything to ensure a wish, and I took that for truth.
If I had been on the other side of the barrier, I'd only act after it became clear he wouldn't stop. I try not to be too hasty.
[ But she won't shy away from saying she would stop him. Because she would, if it became necessary. ]
I'm trying to do better at understanding people, but sometimes the side people show me is. . . I've been confused this whole time, why so many people had negative views of Kano-san. He was never anything but kind to me, and tried to help.
No one person is the same because we all have different experiences which shape us, but we may relate to each other. How we respond to the others isn't the same.
[ Warmth colors her tone and her expression. ]
I think you have a kindness in you that he could respond to. It's a good thing.
If he wanted to be kind to and if he wanted to help you, that should be something to keep with you, but if you have the time, you should also see how people treat others, too.
[He nods, eyes a little wide at how smart her advice is.]
. . . You're right. The way he treats me and the way he treated someone else would have been different. I thought I understood him better than someone who thought he was cruel because I saw his kind side, but both sides were part of who Kano-san was, and I wasn't seeing it all either.

But Archer does try to be pragmatic.
